Tips for Computer Services and Average Rates

If you're involved in the computer service industry or in need of computer services, this post holds valuable information for you. The types of computer services have remained consistent over time, including Cleaning & Dust Removal, Hard Disk Scanning and Optimization, Hardware Repair, Upgrades, Operating System Re-installation, Data Retrieval, and even complete Computer Shop Setup Packages.

However, what does change is the pricing and additional offerings. As of today, the exchange rate for USD to PHP stands at P50.89, and we'll use this for our conversion.

As of October 1, 2017:
The lowest price I found for computer services is P200 ($3.93), while the highest reaches P1,500 ($29.48). For a complete computer shop setup, prices range from P25,000 up to P50,000 ($491.25 to $982.51), depending on factors such as the number of computers and the complexity of the setup.

So, why the disparity in prices? As a computer technician, it can be advantageous to charge higher rates, but the key question is: What value are you providing to your customers in return? While some customers are drawn to lower prices, others are willing to spend more to ensure they get their money's worth.

As a customer, would you trust your valuable computer or data to a technician who quotes a remarkably low price? I can envision these technicians showing up in sandals, shorts, and slippers, armed with only a screwdriver as their tool.

Professional technicians and repair shops with significant overhead costs, such as rent, manpower, electricity, and government dues, will naturally charge higher rates.

For technicians, a valuable tip is to master the art of accurate diagnosis. This allows you to provide a more precise estimate of the time required for repairs. If you're only charging $5 and it takes you an entire day to fix the issue, consider how low your hourly rate becomes.

Costs should also be taken into account. If you offer home service, factor in travel time, transportation expenses, fuel costs, and vehicle maintenance. This is why home service can sometimes be more expensive, and it's essential for customers to understand the reasons behind it.

Always be transparent with customers about the possibility of additional costs, such as parts and other factors. People generally dislike surprises, especially when it means shelling out extra money. Manage their expectations effectively.

Ensure that the services you provide come with a warranty. This demonstrates your confidence in the quality of your work, and if the problem persists, customers can return for free service.

Having an assistant who can run errands, such as buying parts as needed, can be tremendously helpful. It allows you to continue providing uninterrupted service. Speaking of parts, partnering with a reliable vendor is a must. Long payment terms and up-to-date pricing on parts that can be included in your quotations offer a significant advantage.

Ultimately, it's not just about profit margins, but also about fostering repeat business and gaining referrals. Customers will eventually determine whether they were charged fairly or not.

Lastly, it never hurts to follow up with customers and ask for feedback. Serendipity may strike, and they may require additional computer services precisely when you reach out to them.
