The Diet That Worked For Me

Let me begin this blog post with a disclaimer:

I want to emphasize that I am not a dietician or nutritionist. The information I am sharing below is purely based on my personal observations of how my body responded to a specific diet plan. It lacks scientific basis, so it's crucial for responsible individuals to consult their doctors before making any drastic changes to their diet. What worked for me may not work for everyone else.

During our recent annual physical exam at the office, I received concerning feedback about my health. Though not major, these issues had the potential to escalate into more significant problems if left unaddressed. I was dealing with overweight, hypertension, arrhythmia, and high sugar levels. On top of these findings, I also experienced constant fatigue, shortness of breath, and occasional chest pains.

I must confess, I have a deep love for food. The fatty goodness of meat, the satisfaction of rice, the indulgence of sweets, and even beer and red wine. Essentially, everything that could slowly lead me towards a delicious demise. It was a difficult decision, but I had to choose a healthier lifestyle.

With the obvious solution being to adopt a healthy eating plan, I made a trip to the nearest fruit stand to purchase bananas, tomatoes, apples, oranges, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, and seasonal mangoes. Additionally, I visited the grocery store to buy Century Tuna, Nestle Yogurt, Eden Cheese, DelMonte Pineapple, Cheese Whiz, and Lady's Choice Mayonnaise — all of which would be incorporated into my salads. For snacks, I opted for Nescafe Coffee and Skyflakes biscuits.

Now came the challenging part: determining when to start the diet and when to allow myself a cheat day. From Mondays to Thursdays, my breakfast, lunch, and snacks consisted solely of coffee and biscuits. I understand that some of you may cringe at the thought of such a limited diet, but I believed that no hunger meant no progress. In the evenings, I enjoyed a generous bowl of salad, and before bedtime, I sipped on a glass of hot milk.

Oh, and I cannot stress this enough: every morning when I woke up, I made sure to drink a large glass of water. I'm not sure if it was the salad or the water, but my digestion noticeably improved.

As I mentioned earlier, there are risks associated with changing one's diet. Furthermore, there is a high possibility that the fruits I consumed were treated with pesticides. To mitigate this, I made sure to thoroughly clean them before slicing and dicing. Whenever possible, I opted for organic produce.

Fridays to Sundays were my free days, allowing me to indulge in any food and in any quantity I desired. These were my moments of pure happiness — my rewards for a job well done.

Over the following weeks, I started feeling and noticing the difference. My weight dropped from 140lbs to 135lbs. The chest pains vanished, and I felt much lighter during my runs and bike rides. After a few more months, my weight settled at 125lbs and remained there. But most importantly, I'm thrilled to be able to fit into my old pants and small-sized shirts once again.
