Remembering The Good Old Days
Jollibee is a popular fast food chain here in the Philippines. I was in high school when I first heard about it. It was making noise amongst my classmates because a lot of them get excited at the prospect of eating there. I remember one instance where one student was teased by the other kids by pretending to buy a sundae for her but instead just brought back an empty cup. Happy times.
I was finally able to try it once when I asked someone for a date and we ate there. I kept the receipt and thought to myself that a big spender I was because I spent all my money on that meal. It was worth it though because aside from the good food I had a great time with my friend.
During my college years my parents are trying to make ends meet. Although we are not poor, there were five of us siblings so it was really a challenge for my parents supporting. There were times when I went to school and the only money on me is for my fare. I was starving and famished all the time.
When I felt that this is becoming too much of a problem I decided to just show up at my uncle house and live there for a while. During that time there was still no mobile phones so I was not able to tell them in advance that I will be coming. But they were cool about it. I arrived late at night and then the next morning my cousins were surprised upon seeing me plucking grass on their garden wearing their clothes.
I lived there during weekdays. I helped with the house chores and come and gone as I pleased. Again mobile phones were not yet invented during that time so my aunt sometimes was worried sick when I fail to tell her my whereabouts. But she is cool. She just tells me that she doesn’t love me anymore because I made her worry.
Monday was the most exciting day for me because every Monday like clockwork, my uncle would slip a 100 peso bill under the door before he goes to work. That would be my allowance for the week. He also takes home brand new 3.5” diskettes from his office so that I could use it in school.
I would carefully spend that money in the hope that I could save enough so that I could eat at Jollibee.
I have passed the marshmallow test far too many times and as a reward I enjoyed every scent, flavor and taste of that meal.
Up to this day every time I eat at Jollibee it brings me back to those good old days. And up to this date, even if I already have the money to buy that meal as much as I want, I still stop myself from doing so because I do not ever want that memory to fade.
